Bacchus, god of intoxication, rupture, and excess. Not a god you worship, but a god you become. His rites were never about losing control, they were techniques for dismantling it.
The Bacchanal was a portal where trance became revelation, where pleasure cracked open new worlds.

Now, fifteen years into our dance, we return to that gateway.
But this time, we enter it from behind.

What is elegance?
Is it the cut of a dress, or the cut of a gaze that doesn’t care if you approve? Is it silk brushing the thigh, or denim ripped open at the knees? They sell elegance as refinement, sterilized of sweat and stripped of politics. Fast fashion knocks it off by morning, shipped in plastic, worn twice, tossed. But we know better: elegance is not purity. It’s not obediece.

The elegance of not being elegant.

Turning up in boots that have seen more nights than you have hours of sleep. Mesh ripped at the edges, lipstick smeared past your mouth, suit jacket stolen from a lover and never returned. It’s walking past the velvet rope because you are the dress code, not because you follow it. Elegance here is not compliance, it’s intrusion.

We queer elegance when we corrupt it. Pearls tangled in bruises. Gowns dragged across the floor of the club until they reek of sweat and smoke. Leather scuffed from the dance floor, not the showroom. We do not buy elegance, we break it, fuck it, spill drinks on it, and still make it look like it belongs. Because true elegance is not afraid to get dirty.

Skin is the surface where identity is assigned, and refused. Where race is projected. Where gender is policed. Where beauty standards bruise and borders are drawn. And yet, skin remains ungovernable. It flakes, it regenerates, it cracks open to let something new leak through.

To live visibly in your skin, as trans, as racialized, as fat, disabled, scarred, marked, wrinkled, inked, is an act of resistance. To demand space for your skin to exist without justification, to touch and be touched without fear, is revolutionary.

Skin is political.

It holds the weight of gazes, stares, surveillance, but also softness, warmth, friction, breath. It’s not neutral. It’s a manifesto in flesh. Your skin speaks before your mouth does, and it speaks louder on the dance floor, where sweat becomes communion and contact is code.

In a world that tries to sanitize, discipline, and commodify the body, GEGEN SKIN is a refusal. A refusal to be smoothed out, streamlined, or sterilized. Here, the dancefloor is where we molt. Where skins rub raw and real. Where flesh doesn’t behave, it pulses, presses, defies. Where the queer, the unruly, the untouchable become touch itself. To show skin is not to reveal, it is to revolt.

Sexual autonomy is criminalized while its fetishization fuels economies of consumption. Desire is tolerated only when it is hidden, censored, sanitized into digestible aesthetics. The stigma of the whore is not about sex, but about power, the right to control one's own body, to perform, to sell, to refuse, to devour.

A spike collar is no mere adornment, it’s a tool of control, a physical contract etched in steel and skin. It tightens under the grip of hands that pull, guiding the body into submission, twisting it toward the edge of surrender. Sweat beads and slides, tongues tracing the tension where spikes dig just enough to remind who holds the power.

In this exchange, we see how control manifests, like high heels that wobble on cobblestone streets, rumored to have been constructed by patriarchal design so women couldn’t easily run. True or not, the symbolism stands: restricting movement has long been a means to dominate, forcing the body to comply, to teeter precariously under watchful eyes.

Meanwhile, our cities grow thick with cameras: in the name of “safety,” surveillance saturates our streets, offering the paradox of control disguised as protection. Its spikes are as real as those piercing tender skin. Heat throbs in the tightness of the throat, gagging on the pleasure that is bursting forth in desperate pulses. We willingly parade before these lenses, convinced submission grants us liberty, never quite seeking the escape we crave.

Resist. Obey. Provoke

Submission and domination blend into a fluid sexuality, a carousel of swapped pronouns and reversed roles, until the binary of master and servant becomes a lush jungle of power waiting to be explored. We fight “control” with control, dismantling this monochrome uniformity of mass-produced identities. We press our bodies into taboo shapes, break binaries, and taste sweat and latex like communion wine.

I imagine your worn body close to me, your wrinkly skin, your flabby hips, your spotty face, your greasy hair, your smelly armpits, your quirky personality, your loud laugh, your dirty fingernails, your smell of everything that scares the hell out of everyone. But not me.

The idea of the perfect body is a social fairy tale. It's the disciplining of human anatomy so that it always works and doesn't get sick. Anatomo-politics is “used to take control over bodies … to increase their productive force through exercise, drill, and so on” (Foucault). A control that seeks to govern bodies and normalize a standard of beauty, productivity, and desirability. We constantly move within a digital panopticon where we police ourselves and each other, reinforcing able-bodied heteronormative aesthetic standards through algorithms, likes, and face-filter fictions. But like gender, the body is not a fixed entity. It is complex, fluid, changeable, and surprisingly comical.

By resisting the myth of the perfect appearance, we challenge systems of oppression that profit from our insecurities. Bodies can be sites of resistance, of defiance against the capitalist gaze that seeks to calm us down by making us busy with the suffering of imperfection.

It’s a capitalistic framework that simplifies the complexities of life into dualistic choices, each one a stark contrast to its opposite. But within these limits, the full range of human experience is being lost. Gender identity is finally undergoing a revolution. People are challenging this system, transcending the binary mythology that seeks to define, dictate, and restrict them. This is a world where gender is not a fixed point but a fluid spectrum that forms into a myriad of identities and desires. They're the colors in the grayscale, the nuances in the spectrum, perplexing the structures that try to simplify and sterilize everyday experiences.

Which of your body parts would like to be touched?

Touch is a full body sensory immersion. It turns our skin into an emotional wardrobe, that becomes a medium for pressure, heat and pain – perhaps it's the rawest sense. A wild thing! That's why it's highly regulated. How near and far we are from each other is finely regulated and formalized by the parameters of our various relationships with kin, friends, colleagues, and strangers. The order in which we touch one another, where, and with what intensity is conditioned in particular by social norms of gender, place, and even time of day. We operate in a tactile regime or a regime of touch. What is too much and whats too little? Is it offensive or pleasurable to withhold touch or to perform it? Touch connects intimacy, pleasure and violence.

The body and its senses have for far too long been placed in opposition to the intellect and regarded as mere subejcts of mindless pleasure and pain. But touch transcends the separation of body and mind. It is the mind that controls a touch and that leads to an overload of the intellect through the affect of the touch. And it is also the most immediate technique to position ourselves in this world. Touch signifies the difference between the self and the other. It's about exploring the boundary and the relational fabric between bodies. We deploy touch in this way throughout our lives, to learn about other people and other objects. It is the precondition for "othering" but also the ultimate means to gain awareness of other non-normative bodies and embodiments.

And it is all happening on the dance floor. Here it is the fat bass and melodic fragments that try to touch us. They challenge us to be touched and to touch ourselves at the same time. We move to touch and we touch to move.
At GEGEN, touch is not received, it is enacted.

What do you smell?

Of all the senses, smell may be the most fleeting. It can be hazy and volatile, like a gust of wind, and yet still haunt us for a lifetime. Whether it is the freshly mown grass from a childhood memory or the dank miasma of a public toilet you used to cruise, a smell can spark unexpected remembrances or dramatic changes in mood.

Smell can be comforting or repugnant, or both at the same time. Like projections on a smoke screen, our opinions about smell are flavored by the normative binaries in which they are situated. We are told that "men should smell like men," in a showcase of strength and masculinity, unyielding as wood – just as we are told that "women should smell nice," docile and sweet, like a fragile flower to be protected. Further, we are taught that everyone should be bathed and squeaky clean, with any bodily odor seen as a beastly betrayal to the "progress of human civilization."

And yet, at times, you may find yourself engulfed in an odoriferous here and now. Perhaps when buried in someone's armpit, soothed by stinging notes of grapefruit and cumin. Or when wandering downwards and presented with the tang of civet and piss. Maybe you get dizzy at the sensation of your lover's smegma caressing your nose and tongue while discovering their secrets and secretions...

Intoxicated by this appreciation of bodily musks, we may be tempted to only valorize the sweaty "essential" oil of our human embodiment and deem any additional fragrance as an artificiality to be distilled away like a social mask. If an experience of the same odorant may feel different to organisms with different olfactory receptors, what is smell then but a mummer's play of the mind, a theatrical enactment on the stage of our consciousness?

As GEGEN turns thirteen, we ask: What does it mean to come of age?

For many cultures, the thirteenth year marks the end of childhood, a transition from being a child to becoming an adult, and the turning point at which one may begin to be held accountable for one's own actions. This age is associated with puberty and thus a transition to reproductive labor, ownership and consumption.

When we step out of this prescribed path (as many queer and other marginalized folx do), the pressure to "act your age" based on a vision of progressive deterioration is both heightened and ignored. Ageing isn’t a problem to be solved. The pressure to be "age-appropriate" is also gendered, ableist and racist towards those multitudes who are not allowed to age at all. (While guys are still valorized at a "ripe old age," as soon as women hit forty they are frequently considered "too old" to spend a night dancing in a club.)

One thing is certain: time does not stop – so ageing is both unavoidable and simply the experience of moving through life. To age is to open new doors without forgetting the path we have walked before. To age is to remember the past while we embrace new possibilities.

The third decade of the 21st Century, later known as the Raving Twenties, was a vibrant period in the city historically known as Berlin. Until recently, little evidence survived from this golden age of Ecstatic Dance Mystery (EDM) with the exception of few bathroom stall confessions depicted in partially preserved films and images. To fill this gap, we have attempted to decipher some recently discovered artifacts found in a box buried deep in the former mudbanks of the Spree River.

Inside the box, a few precious scraps of paper must have been part of a private diary. Roughly translated, these accounts cast light on some of the proto-rituals developed at the time, adding detail and insight to the beliefs and practices of various Ecstatic communities in the city of Berlin. In the extracts we have analyzed, the author discusses a specific pleasure ceremony, referred to as GEGEN Mystery, which seemed to have happened at a cult site called KitKatClub in "Nov. 2023." From rare internet archives, we have already deduced GEGEN’s paradoxically opposite meanings:

One meaning is closed, defined in terms of space. The other is open and undefined in terms of time. In the contemporary moment the idea of “enemy” – in which a thought and an action can be identifiable as “against” [...] is not clear anymore as power relationships changed [...] And this gave space to markets to regenerate themselves through the queer-counter cultural movements by producing an oligopoly of empty events repeating themselves [...] crystallising the institutionalisation of big “queer meccas” which exercise more and more power on the scene. This process is verifiable in Berlin as the incubator of new world trends in the arts of entertainment.

The first paragraph of our ancient diary describes entering this temple: The line undulated slightly as it wound around the corner, waiting to be admitted inside. After changing into ceremonial garments, the author seems to have been allowed into the main halls, thereby altering their neural net:

As I emerged I could see light above me. [...] The walls had animated scenes on them: fluorescent sex scenes that flickered to the constantly changing lights. [...] Then I began to experience visual and auditory hallucinations; vague at first, just chaotic noise knocking around my head but increasingly well-resolved and realistic.

However, perhaps the most superb example of actual unfolding EDMs can be found in descriptions of the "ravers" encountered when reaching the grand chamber:

I spilled into the room abruptly as the set reached a crescendo. The air was thick with a heady mix of desire and liberation, defined by unapologetic passion [...] glowing neon harnesses crisscrossed torsos while sheer mesh bodysuits revealed tantalizing glimpses of tattoos [...] As the night unfurled, it was clear that these queer ravers were architects of a new dimension, where the boundaries of reality and fantasy blurred and the very act of existing became a transcendent art form [...] Filling the floor, a thousand living constellations danced in ecstatic rapture.

Thanks to this firsthand account of GEGEN Mystery, we can now start to imagine the Ecstatic Dance Mysteries of the Raving Twenties. As the deciphering continues, we invite you to ask: What can these techno-cults of the late capitalistic era teach us today?

Communities are born through joyful transformation, when people discover new possibilities together while resisting, inventing, or activating something that is already in play. Yet, the hopefulness that comes with the word "community" has also been weaponized as an engine of normative power and capital.

We were first drawn by the sound. And somewhere around 35Hz, in the heat, dampness, and darkness of it, we came to accept that we are all the same. We came to accept that we are all equal.
To build community means to feel represented because you can influence others and in turn be influenced by them. But to create community also means we must be open to intimacy and risk being wounded. Just as intimacy and closeness can be enabling, they can also be sources of coercion, manipulation, and exploitation. Within every community lies both unity and vulnerability.

Our emotional state of choice is Ecstasy. Our nourishment of choice is Love. Our addiction of choice is technology. Our religion of choice is music.

The feeling of belonging to a community can be exhilarating. But when reduced to an imperative to have always “good relationships” with everyone and everything, community becomes simplistic and reactionary. Love and friendship can be contorted to erase power relations and systemic violence, enforcing obedience to oppressive norms of politeness or devotion.

Zeus, king of the gods, shall oversee the competition and provide the thunderous soundtrack that shall shake the halls to their foundations. The two main motions of the Earth are rotation and revolution – reciprocally transforming one into the other in coital rhythm with the Sun and the Moon. Consider the Moon and the tide; life comes from the sea and the sea continuously beats off. Plants rise in the direction of the Sun and then collapse in the direction of the Earth. Time is spatialized by this discoidal form – the ring, the ANNULUS – and each cycle is a new cosmopoietic act.

AN-NU-AL

The foremost symbolic space of temporal repetition is the Earth's revolution around the Sun. Each ANNUAL "new year" marks the point when days becomes longer and time begins again. The wish for a new start can be found in orgiastic ceremonies symbolizing chaos; the primordial moment before creation when all values and rules are abolished and contradictions are integrated into a dramatic harmony of the (w)hole.

AN-NIHILATION

Connected to the nocturnal order of the Moon cycle, the number 12 carries mythological and magical symbolism representing cosmic order; a (w)hole where everything coexists with its opposite, opening up the potential for new forms of pleasure and the ANNIHILATION of fixed identities.
